On the bustling streets of Vadodara, another population lives alongside us—the homeless dogs. They are a familiar sight, yet their daily struggle for survival often goes unnoticed. Animal homelessness is a complex, man-made problem that requires a compassionate, community-wide solution. At People for Paws, we believe that every animal deserves safety and care, whether in a home or in their community.

The Root Causes of Homelessness

To solve a problem, we must understand its origins. The primary drivers of animal homelessness include:

• Uncontrolled Breeding: A single unsterilized female dog and her offspring can produce thousands of puppies in just a few years. Without enough homes, this leads to an ever-growing street population.
• Pet Abandonment: Families who are unprepared for the lifetime commitment of a pet often abandon them when they become inconvenient, sick, or old.
• Lack of Awareness: Many people are unaware of the importance of sterilization (spaying/neutering) or the realities of life for an animal on the streets.

Our Multi-Pronged Strategy

People for Paws tackles this issue head-on with a humane and effective approach:

• Animal Birth Control (ABC): Our primary focus is on large-scale sterilization drives. We humanely trap, neuter, vaccinate, and return (TNR) community dogs. This stabilizes the population and reduces aggressive behaviour and mating-related fights.
• Rescue and Rehabilitation: We run a dedicated rescue service for sick, injured, and orphaned homeless animals. They receive medical treatment, nutrition, and care at our facility until they can be rehomed or safely returned to their territory.
• Community Engagement: We work with local communities in Vadodara to foster a culture of co-existence. This includes setting up feeding spots, educating residents about stray dog behaviour, and resolving human-animal conflicts peacefully.
